What is depression? According to the World Health Organization, depression is a common mental health disorder. Globally, it is estimated that 5% of adults suffer from this disorder. It is characterized by persistent sadness and a lack of interest or pleasure in activities that were previously rewarding and enjoyable. In addition, it can alter sleep and appetite, and is frequently accompanied by fatigue and lack of concentration. Depression is a major cause of disability worldwide, and has a significant impact on the burden of disease. The effects of depression can be prolonged or recurrent, and can dramatically impair a person’s ability to perform and live a rewarding life.

The causes of depression include complex interactions of social, psychological and biological factors. Various life circumstances, for example, childhood adversity, loss and unemployment contribute to the development of depression and can lead to it.

Psychological and pharmacological treatments for depression are available. However, in low- and middle-income countries, services for the care and treatment of people with depression are often poor or non-existent. It is estimated that, in these countries, more than 75% of people with mental health disorders do not receive treatment.

LIGHTENING THE DEPRESSION

While you see your family doctor, at Nerea Tulum we give you these tips to make this stage more bearable.

  1. Know your body and your feelings. Observe, detect and note any physical symptoms or feelings before going into depression, the next time, you will act faster, minimizing the ravages.
  2. Check with your doctor what foods and beverages you should avoid with the medications prescribed in your case. If you are not on medication, try to identify which foods make you feel better and learn which ones naturally support happiness hormones, for example: chocolate to secrete serotonin, banana to obtain tryptophan, chili to release endorphins. If you are not allergic, walnuts are an excellent antioxidant high in Omega 3, which promotes serotonin. Finally, avocado. Avocado is said to improve people’s mood and it’s not just for its pleasant taste and beautiful color but for scientific reasons. It turns out that the body naturally produces homocysteine, an amino acid essential to produce proteins; however, excess of this substance blocks the production of serotonin and dopamine, responsible for regulating our mood and improving our rest at night. The good news is that folate (a substance abundant in avocados) helps prevent excess homocysteine in the body, so consuming it regularly, in addition to bringing you instant good mood, will help you sleep better and therefore wake up happier every day.
  3. Save and have a balance allocated especially to pamper yourself from time to time and when you meet a goal, this will give you focus and enthusiasm to achieve it. A good self gift is a trip to our house Nerea Tulum to renew yourself, enjoy the sea, a yoga session, a massage and a wellness menu, vegetarian or not, but with organic ingredients that will not interfere with your medications or your dietary plan suggested by your doctor.
