Being your path to well-being is Nerea´s main objective. That is why we offer you some tips to minimize the effects of these undesirable stages that we have all gone through.

What is depression? According to the World Health Organization, depression is a common mental health disorder. Globally, it is estimated that 5% of adults suffer from this disorder. It is characterized by persistent sadness and a lack of interest or pleasure in activities that were previously rewarding and enjoyable. In addition, it can alter sleep and appetite, and is frequently accompanied by fatigue and lack of concentration. Depression is a major cause of disability worldwide, and has a significant impact on the burden of disease. The effects of depression can be prolonged or recurrent, and can dramatically impair a person’s ability to perform and live a rewarding life.

The causes of depression include complex interactions of social, psychological and biological factors. Various life circumstances, for example, childhood adversity, loss and unemployment contribute to the development of depression and can lead to it.

Psychological and pharmacological treatments for depression are available. However, in low- and middle-income countries, services for the care and treatment of people with depression are often poor or non-existent. It is estimated that, in these countries, more than 75% of people with mental health disorders do not receive treatment.

LIGHTENING THE DEPRESSION

While you see your family doctor, at Nerea Tulum we give you these tips to make this stage more bearable.

  1. Know your body and your feelings. Observe, detect and note any physical symptoms or feelings before going into depression, the next time, you will act faster, minimizing the ravages.
  2. Check with your doctor what foods and beverages you should avoid with the medications prescribed in your case. If you are not on medication, try to identify which foods make you feel better and learn which ones naturally support happiness hormones, for example: chocolate to secrete serotonin, banana to obtain tryptophan, chili to release endorphins. If you are not allergic, walnuts are an excellent antioxidant high in Omega 3, which promotes serotonin. Finally, avocado. Avocado is said to improve people’s mood and it’s not just for its pleasant taste and beautiful color but for scientific reasons. It turns out that the body naturally produces homocysteine, an amino acid essential to produce proteins; however, excess of this substance blocks the production of serotonin and dopamine, responsible for regulating our mood and improving our rest at night. The good news is that folate (a substance abundant in avocados) helps prevent excess homocysteine in the body, so consuming it regularly, in addition to bringing you instant good mood, will help you sleep better and therefore wake up happier every day.
  3. Save and have a balance allocated especially to pamper yourself from time to time and when you meet a goal, this will give you focus and enthusiasm to achieve it. A good self gift is a trip to our house Nerea Tulum to renew yourself, enjoy the sea, a yoga session, a massage and a wellness menu, vegetarian or not, but with organic ingredients that will not interfere with your medications or your dietary plan suggested by your doctor.

The Mayan Train started operating last December 16th, although not in its entirety. In this pre-opening stage, the section between Cancun and Campeche will be enabled, while construction continues on the rest of the routes for the official inauguration at the end of February. Just in September, President Andrés Manuel López Obrador toured one of the sections of the Tren Maya, departing from Campeche to Mérida, Yucatán.

What is considered the most ambitious project of the current administration is 95.7 per cent complete in section two, that is, 224 kilometres of the 234 kilometres that run from Escárcega to Calkiní, in Campeche. The construction of the remaining sections continues to advance under the command of the Ministry of National Defense (SEDENA). The first Mayan Train convoy that has been presented is of standard type and has capacity for 230 passengers, although in the future it is contemplated the inclusion of cars that will function as restaurants and other long-distance cars with showers and sleeping spaces. In total, 42 units will be servicing the Mayan Train routes, although for now 28 have been made available for the start-up weeks.

The complete route

According to information from the Fondo Nacional de Fomento al Turismo (FONATUR), the route of the Tren Maya will be 1,554 kilometres in the states of Chiapas, Campeche, Tabasco, Yucatán and Quintana Roo. Along the route there will be stops and 16 stations near tourist areas and different airports. In the case of Yucatan, stations will be located at Merida Airport, Teya and Izamal, with stops in Maxcanu and Tixkokob.

World Paella Day (September 20) is celebrated in Tulum, Mexico!

We are glad to offer this delicious dish in Umbal, our gorgeous ocean front restaurant, once a week, to choose from three options: vegetarian, seafood or beef.

Nerea is one of the few boutique hotels in Tankah Bay, Tulum that offers this incredible Spanish dish beautifully cooked and presented by our Chef Carlos Peregrina.

The paella is a kind of large frying pan, with two or more small handles and little depth. This proportion allows the ingredients prepared in it to be adequately cooked. It is used to cook paella rice, a typical Spanish dish with variations in the different regions of the country.

Origin of the name

There are several theories about the origin of the word “paella”. Some attribute it to Latin, since sartén in Latin is spelled “patella”. The word paella means frying pan, in Valencian, and was taken from French at the end of the 16th century. It was synonymous in Spanish with “arroz valenciano” or “arroz a la valenciana” from 1900 onwards.

There is another much more romantic theory. It is said that there is a story in which a man prepared paella for his girlfriend to win her affection. In Spanish, paella may be a derivation of the phrase “por ella” or “for her”. While this may just be a cute story, there is some truth to it, as in Spain women generally do the cooking, yet paella is traditionally a man’s job.

Seafood Paella

Paella is undoubtedly one of the emblematic dishes of Spanish gastronomy, especially Valencian, and there is no tourist who does not succumb to the charms of this rice.

History of paella

According to experts, this dish emerged in the rural areas of Valencia, between the 15th and 16th centuries, due to the need of peasants and shepherds for a meal that was easy to prepare and with the ingredients they had on hand in the countryside. It was always eaten in the afternoon.

Originally, the ingredients were poultry, rabbit or hare, fresh vegetables, rice, saffron and olive oil, which were mixed in the paella with water and orange branches. Everything was cooked over a low flame.

Unique recipe?

The peasants used the snails they found in the fields, Valencian paella can also include rabbit, duck, chicken, beef, tomatoes, beans, peppers, zucchini and onions. Saffron was added to give the dish more flavor and aroma. Some people also make it with cuttlefish, squid, prawns, crayfish, mussels and/or clams, as well as fresh vegetables.

Paella with squid

But today, the best known version of this typical dish is the mixed paella, a later variation that horrifies the Valencians, who consider that the authentic Valencian paella cannot mix seafood with meat. But paella is one of those dishes that admits practically any ingredient, each person uses the one he/she likes the most and there is never one like the other. There is no recipe that unifies the great variety of possibilities of this dish.
